Active Physiotherapy Programs
Time limited and goal oriented, active, progressive
exercise programs are employed to facilitate an early return
to work or activities of daily living. Each program is individualized
to the client and is prescribed by either a physiotherapist
or a chiropractor and supervised directly by a kinesiologist.
Client education is provided throughout the program.
*In-home services
are also available.
Functional Restoration Program (FRP)
Consists of a multidisciplinary program with an appropriate
balance of pain management and active physical rehabilitation.
The program is time limited with the primary functional goal
of return to work or activities of normal living.
The client education component consists of structured education
classes and qualified health care professionals provide one
on one education.
In the FRP, additional health care professionals become involved
with the rehabilitation team.
Behavioral Therapists are introduced to help the client develop
the necessary skills in pain and stress management, as well
as relaxation techniques.
Psychologists are introduced when the client has entrenched
chronic pain behavior and/or emotional stress.
Occupational Therapist (OT)
will work with the client, the health care practitioner and
his/her employer to develop a realistic return to work schedule.
Additionally, the OT may perform an on-site job analysis, if
deemed necessary.
Criteria for Referral: (1) Disability
for at least four months. (2) Lack
of surgically correctable lesion. (3) Psychological
and linguistic capacities to interacting groups.
(4) Informed willingness to participate.
Work Hardening/Conditioning Programs
If a work hardening/conditioning program is implemented, the
ERGOS Work Simulator will be utilized.
An on-site job analysis may be performed to determine if there
are work site accommodations required.
As the client improves in endurance and work tolerance, a
modified return to work schedule is prepared and arrangements
to implement the schedule are made with the employer.
At the end of the program, the client should be able to return
to full and gainful employment.
Our specialty is returning people to work safely and efficiently.
Program lengths are 6-8 weeks in duration. Upon discharge,
we also provide the client with an independent home exercise
program.
Chronic Pain Management Program
When a client is referred to North York Rehabilitation Centre,
an assessment is performed to determine whether a Chronic Pain
Management Program is appropriate.
When such a program is recommended, a musculoskeletal practitioner
and a Psychologist establishes a comprehensive treatment program,
setting attainable recovery goals.
The treatment program that is implemented is a combination
of pain coping strategies, exercises, visualization techniques,
pain education classes, pain management modalities and active
rehabilitation.
The client outcomes are reviewed on a regular basis and modifications
to the program are made to optimize its effectiveness. As the
client’s pain coping skills increase, he/she is progressed
into a more active rehabilitation component of the Functional
Restoration Component.
